The small town of Millfield has experienced an economic renaissance since ProHealth Solutions established its specialized prostate cream manufacturing facility there four years ago. Once struggling with high unemployment after the closure of its textile mill, the town now showcases how niche healthcare manufacturing can revitalize local economies.

The 60,000-square-foot facility, which produces therapeutic topical treatments for prostate health, has created over 120 direct jobs ranging from production line workers to research scientists. More impressively, it has generated approximately 200 indirect jobs through supporting businesses and services.

“When the textile industry left, we weren’t sure what would replace those jobs,” says Mayor Elaine Winters. “The arrival of this specialized healthcare manufacturer has not only provided employment but has also diversified our economic base with skilled positions that pay above-average wages.”

The facility represents a growing trend of pharmaceutical companies establishing focused production sites for specific health products rather than massive general manufacturing plants. This approach allows for greater quality control and specialization while creating opportunities for smaller communities that might not attract larger facilities.

Beyond employment, the company has invested in local education, establishing scholarship programs at Millfield Community College for students pursuing degrees in pharmaceutical sciences and chemical engineering. This investment helps create a pipeline of qualified local candidates for future positions.

The economic impact extends to neighboring businesses as well. Local restaurants, shops, and service providers report increased activity, and three new housing developments have broken ground to accommodate the influx of workers.

As the global market for men’s health products continues to expand, specialized manufacturing facilities like this one demonstrate how focused healthcare production can create sustainable economic opportunities in smaller communities while addressing important health needs.
